Foulden Maar is a maar (a dried out volcanic crater lake) located southeast of Middlemarch in Otago, New Zealand. It was formed 23 million years ago and is filled with diatomite, caused by annual layers of microscopic algae dying off. It is the only maar of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and one of New Zealand's pre-eminent fossil sites.
